Expedition EL is to Suburban, what Ginger is to Mary Anne
It’s like blonde vs brunettes. I’ve operated both for many miles, Ford was WAY late to the game in marketshare for Suburban customers. Suburban is the STAPLE of all STAPLES, but the Expedition EL mack dad version is more ride for your G money no doubt. Pres George forever put the suburban in the walk of fame.
It was there already, but he did to the Suburban what Obama did for the 300C, what Snoop did for the Deville, what little Puff Daddy did for the Range Rover, what Gilligan did for the Island, what Pam Anderson did for loose women worldwide…you get the point.
So Ford FINALLY made a Suburban, they called it the Exped EL, should have just named it the Ford Suburban, but they didn’t. Nonetheless, they did a exeptional job However, their marketing of the New EL is not any where fierce enough to break Suburbans reign. The parking lot at private school carpool lines throughout the country have been stuffed with hot-rich soccer moms driving….you guessed it…Suburbans.
So how can Ford break this mold, this success profiling that Chevy has burnt into the brains of businessmen and soccer moms coast to coast. Answer: They can’t. Yes it’s true Suburban is finally loosing it’s stranglehold it’s had on Amercian upper/middle class since it formally replaced the Buick Estate Wagon. (the Jeep Grand Wagoneer was a serious early 80’s contender, but mechanical issues kept it from the crown.) With so many makes and models to choose from, who will fill the shoes of the Suburban that has now fallen from it’s reign of power. Will it be the Ford, I doubt it. Should it be the Ford Suburban, undoubtedly.
The Yuppies are still in shock/denial mode that their Suburban, the icon of “I’m rich enough to be driving a new benz, but I don’t want to show it” went bankrupt. These people disown family members that go bankrupt, muchless stay loyal to their chariot company that files CH11. It is a manic state of affairs in auto gossip circilesween the county club. The conversatin piece used to be “Jack wants me to get a Suburban, but I really wwant a Tahoe” To “Jack wants me to get rid of the Tahoe, but doesnt want to spring for a Lexus or even a Rover boy I’m pissed” Her friend suggestes possibly the LR3 Rover, but Jack said keep it under 40k during the current “administation”. You East and West Coast Yankees may not understand this tidbit of Greek Mythology, but e is a quick Real Deal factoid: in most caes a Suburban LTZ customer has much higher net worth than a Escalade ESV customer. Opposite applies in Navigator vs Expedition drivers.
So now you see the issue at hand. Either Jack is goign to say “oh screw it, everyone in town knows we’re rich anyway, and get Suzie a new S class in a moment of ‘oh screw these car dealers’ frenzie. (btw, this is what people do, they have all this conversation for months about how they are going to change their habits. D Day comes, they get four squared by a local
toyota dealer they do not know, and insult Jack’s ego. So Jack calls Mercedes store from Toyota showroom and asks for the guy that sold his famiily for years. Buys a new benz over the phone, loudly announces the equipment, the price, and reconfirms the drive out amount. With the in your face four square boy wrap up “perfect, I’ll just write you a check for eighty three thousand, four hundred, and sixty seven dollars, the mr’s and I are leaving this Toyota place now and on our way to pick it up…thank’s again…sure…we’ll bring that trade in, thank you for allowing me to trade it in there. perfect…see you shortly”
And, that my friend is reality to mroe than you think. Can Ford catch the interception pass that GM has thrown, or will Obama shoot the duck mid air, and all makers will pick up pieces of the coveted suburbna pig skinto call their own?
FYI, my dream man show SUV would be a Dodge 2500 Cummins mack daddy’ed up Suburban clone. (ok, redneck it is, I’ll wear that) The mega cab Laramie truck is basically it, just keep the mega cab part until it hits the tailgate. That would be a truck rig that I would keep for ten years. JCFW
